Went and saw Oblivion last night. Didn’t have many expectations on it other than to be visually spectacular, but I’m happy to report that not only is it indeed visually spectacular, the plot was much better than I thought it’d be. It took some turns that weren’t completely obvious, and the filmmakers even plugged a plot hole that had been nagging at my brain for much of the movie, which is almost unheard of. It won’t go down in history as a sci-fi classic or anything, but at least it didn’t have a completely empty shell of a plot.
15-year-olds raised on a diet of Michael Bay Transformers movies looking for an all-out action movie might be a bit disappointed however because while there is plenty of exciting action sequences, it’s not a rollercoaster ride kind of action movie. I thought it balanced nicely between story and action, though, and it never felt like it dragged on for too long.
I am admittedly a sucker for many of this film’s ingredients (sci-fi? check. post-apocalyptic? check. modern “minimalist” design? check. and so on) so I’m sure I’m much more forgiving of Oblivion’s flaws than others might be, but if you think it looks interesting, by all means go check it out.

Forensic Artist Proves That Women Literally Don’t Know Their Own Beauty

A new addition to Dove’s Real Beauty campaign asks a forensic artist to draw two sketches of women—one based on their own description, and one from a stranger—with shocking results.

Beauty is said to be in the eye of the beholder. Studies have shown, though that when the beauty in question is a woman’s own, and the beholder’s eye is theirs as well, only 4% of women around the world consider themselves beautiful. Dove has long been working toward shifting that paradigm with the alternately lauded and derided Real Beauty campaign. The brand’s latest effort at changing self-perception attempts to do so through eyewitness testimony.

Recently, Dove hired former police forensic artist Gil Zamora to illustrate some psychologically revealing sketches. In a campaign created by Ogilvy Toronto, a series of women described themselves to Zamora in minute detail, from behind a curtain. The artist in turn created composites as though trying to identify a criminal. Next, each participant was asked to describe another woman present. The results are dramatic and sort of moving.

Steal Like Picasso: How Outside Inspiration Can Fuel True Innovation
Picasso’s apocryphal line, “Good artists borrow, great artists steal,” can apply to any industry, not just art—and it can create real innovation, not just derivative knock-offs, if done correctly.

No GPS! Aspiring London taxi drivers memorize a tangle of streets
(Photo: Carl Court / AFP - Getty Images)
A student ponders while drawing routes on a map of London in a test centre in north London. All London black cab drivers are required to pass the Knowledge in order to be issued with a Hackney Carriage Licence. On average, between three and four years are needed to acquire this knowledge. A recent scientific study has shown that the area of the brain responsible for spatial memory, the hippocampus was significantly larger in taxi drivers. Aboard London taxis, drivers do not use GPS, they know the city by heart, preferring to rely on their memory rather than on modern technologies.
